The SIMA screen, a sheet of translucent film over acrylic The SIMA mirror, a sheet of mirrored film mounted on board Simple – There’s No Comparison to Your SM3i Examples of other age-old video transfer devices for auction on eBay include the manufacturers SIMA, DMC, Polestar, Kalimar, Ambico, Goldline, Coastar, etc. These devices were manufactured in the 1980’s/90's and customized for yesterday’s bulky video camcorders. The plastic screens are coated with cracks, chips, flaking, etc. due to age Bright light “hot-spots” are produced on the screen deterring from the final product Many mirrors are second-surface type producing diffractions and degrade with age A built-in macro lens is not necessary with today’s camera. The transfer process must pass through this lens in these old machines thus deterring from the final product Comparison to a SIMA? My favorite question relates to a comparison of this SM3i with a SIMA type? I purchased a SIMA type on eBay to present the characteristics of that product from the 1980's. My response is simple: Plastic Body - The SIMA type incorporates a plastic body Coated Plastic Screen - The SIMA type projection screen is merely a clear piece of acrylic overlain by a sheet of translucent paper that ripples and peels off with age (see photo on left). The SM3i screen has an embedded optical composition and design engineered for the use in rear projection. Screen Too Large - The video transfer device by SIMA type has a screen 300% larger than the SM3i. This larger screen makes your transfers lose quality. The screen in the SM3i is just perfect for quality, not too small (as in the old machines) nor too large. Peel-Off Mirror - The SIMA type projection mirror is simply a strengthened piece of cardboard with a peel-off foil surface (see photo on left). The SM3i first-surface mirror is of Digital Grade - the highest mirror quality on the flattest optical float glass The SIMA type was a decent machine for its time (1980s) but will not provide the SM3i results with the digital age. Simple - There's No Comparison Examples of deteriorating screens from the 1980's machines being sold on eBay - Scratches, Staining, Peeling, Inherent Particles, etc Why would you want to use a 1980’s device with your 21st century camera? You can purchase the SM3i today and see the brilliant results. 21st Century Camera + 1980's Video Transfer Device = 1980's Results 21st Century Camera + 21st Century SM3i = 21st Century Results!
